Fabric Upholstery
FABRIC UPHOLSTERY - COMMON SENSE CARE
Through our array of manufacturers, we offer a multitude of fabrics which allow you to create a look that is “all your own”. We cater to the wishes of today’s consumer by offering fabrics ranging from ultra durable to decorative and delicate. The following tips are provided to assist you in maintaining your furniture’s beauty for years.
- All cushions and pillows should be reversed and rotated (“fluff and flip”) on a regular basis. This re-arranging of cushions will reduce wear and the setting effect which can result from always sitting in your favorite spot basically by keeping the filling evenly distributed for maximum comfort. It also, helps guard against wear and tear of the fabric.
- Always consider furniture placement carefully (use our expert staff to assist you) whether in your home or in an office. Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible, as Ultra-Violet rays can cause discoloration or fading in fabric. Manufacturers do not guarantee fabrics for durability or color fastness.
- Light vacuuming is recommended on a periodic basis. Regular vacuuming will prevent an accumulation of dust and pollutants from “setting in” to your fabric and causing discoloration. Remember to vacuum all sides of cushions and pillows.
- As there are many types of fabrics available, so too are there several recommended cleaning methods for upholstery. All fabrics have cleaning codes. However, due to the wide range of fibers used today, it is impossible to publish cleaning instructions for all fabrics. Therefore, we are only publishing the most widely known codes as a source of information. Whelan’s does endorse any particular product or cleaning method for fabric.
- Cleaning Code S – Spot clean, using a mild water free solvent or dry cleaning product. Clean only in a well ventilated room and avoid any product containing Carbon Tetrachloride or other toxic materials. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.
- Cleaning Code W – Spot clean, using the foam only from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non-solvent upholstery shampoo product. Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.
- Cleaning Code SW – Spot clean, using either a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo or the foam only from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent. When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow the instructions carefully and clean only in a well ventilated room. Avoid any product that contains Carbon Tetrachloride or other toxic materials. Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. Pretest a small area before proceeding. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.
- Cleaning Code X – Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent accumulation of dust and grime. Water based foam cleaners or solvent based cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface pile, and therefore, should not be used. Dry clean only and have them pretest in a small area before proceeding.
