WOOD FURNITURE - COMMON SENSE CARE
As a natural product, wood reacts to changes in the environment. Decorative finishes “seal” the wood and help to lessen the impact of changes in humidity, heat and sunlight. Overall, wood products are very durable and by using these common sense tips, your furniture will retain its beauty for many years.

  • Whenever possible, maintain a consistent temperature range in your home or office, as this will minimize the swelling or shrinking of your furniture. Also try to place your pieces away from sources of extreme change in heat and humidity, like windows, fireplaces and air conditioning/heating outlets. If your furniture is placed near windows or glass doors, attempt to draw your curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours. Prolonged exposure to sunlight (ultra-violet rays) can cause fading or bleaching effect on wood products over a period of time.
  • Dusting is an important part of furniture maintenance. As you know, our air carries dust, pollen and other pollutants which can settle on exposed wood. Over time these pollutants can accumulate and lead to discoloration and possible scratching of finishes. Soil buildup can be removed (usually every six months) by rubbing with a soft cloth dampened in a 50/50 solution of warm water and an ammonia-free detergent. Follow by wiping the furniture dry (always in the direction of the wood grain) with a clean cloth dampened with warm water.
  • Occasional polishing with a high-quality, non-silicone furniture polish will prolong and enhance fine furniture.  Most manufacturers recommend professional quality wood cleaners and polishes such as “Guardian” or “Guardsman” products for your maintenance routine.   Whelan’s does not endorse any particular brand.
  • Always remove liquids from fine furniture (especially solid wood) surfaces as quickly as possible. Prolonged exposure to liquids can cause discoloration to the finish and may cause damage to decorative veneers: this is especially true of alcohol, perfume and other high acid/ alkali content liquids.  Use a soft, slightly damp cloth and wipe in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Plastic or rubber materials should not be placed directly on a wood finish. Chemicals in the plastic and some rubber may soften and damage the finish if in contact with the furniture over a long period of time. Especially keep this in mind when placing accessories on the tops of fine furniture. Be sure to place a strip of felt, leather or cork under accessories to avoid these markings.
  • The tips from above also apply to leather top tables. Always blot spills as rapidly as possible when entertaining try to use table cloths, trivets and coasters as extra layers of protection.
  • Scratches or mars can be touched up or covered with a mar or scratch remover or touch-up stick. These can be purchased at a paint or hardware store.
